A stone of love, prosperity, growth, and dignity, Peridot, the August birthstone is often associated with harmony, happiness, and good fortune, and is said to possess magical and healing properties that protect the wearer against nightmares.
Much like other gemstones, peridot has a positive impact on the wearer, as it can cure cowardice, brighten the wit, calm anger, alleviate emotional burdens, overcome fear and depression, and also release jealousy and spite. Peridot also promotes forgiveness and responsibility, dissipates negative patterns and vibrations, facilitates healing, and can be utilized to manifest abundance in life.
The origin of the name Peridot is uncertain. Some believe that it is named after the latin word paederos. Another origin of the word peridot is the Arabic “faridat,” meaning gem.
Other medical uses of the August birthstone include balancing the endocrine system, aiding in the healing of ulcers of the stomach and duodenum, strengthening the eyes, and also supporting the optimal functioning of the liver, gall bladder, spleen, and pancreas. When placed on the abdomen, peridot can lessen pain during the birthing process, stimulate contractions, and assist in the opening of the birth canal.
Interestingly, the gemstone worn by Egyptian Queen Cleopatra is thought to have been peridot and not emerald, as many believe.
